What is NHTET Exam? Hospitality Teachers Eligibility Test

The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) conducts the National Hospitality Teachers Eligibility Test (NHTET). This exam specifically targets individuals aspiring to become teachers in the field of hospitality management and catering technology.

NHTET Exam in nutshell

Why to clear NHTET Exam?
This exam will make you eligible to apply against the available vacancy for Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates in NCHMCT affiliated IHMs.
Note: NHTET qualified candidates don’t get automatic entry to NCHMCT affiliated IHMs. They must go through another selection process for roles like Assistant Lecturer or Teaching Associates taken by individual IHM’s.

Here are some key points about the NHTET exam:

Purpose:

The primary purpose of the NHTET exam is to ensure that individuals aspiring to become teachers in hospitality management. Who possess the necessary knowledge and skills required for effective teaching in this field.

Eligibility:

Bachelor in Hotel Management + at least 2 years Hospitality Industry Experience after obtaining Degree (6 months IT is part of Courses, not to be considered as experience for this purpose)

or

Full time Master’s Degree in Hospitality Administration/ Hotel Management/ Culinary Art with at least 55% marks

Exam Format:

The NHTET exam is conducted as written exam. It will assess the candidate’s knowledge in subjects related to hotel management subjects, and teaching aptitude.

Certification: Upon successfully passing the NHTET exam, candidates receive a certificate of eligibility. Enabling them to apply for Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates positions in NCHMCT affiliated IHMs. This certification is valid for a certain period only. After which candidates may need to renew their eligibility through additional assessments or examinations.

Career Opportunities: Individuals holding a valid NHTET certification open up various career opportunities in the field of teaching and education. Qualified candidates can apply for Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates positions in NCHMCT affiliated IHMs.

NHTET in Nutshell

  • The NHTET Scheme aims to identify and select the most qualified candidates for the positions of Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates in NCHMCT-affiliated IHMs. These individuals will be chosen through a process known as the NHTET Exam.
  • Candidates who qualify for the Assistant Lecturer position will have the exclusive right to apply for any vacancies announced by NCHMCT-affiliated IHMs. Whether in the Government sector, PSU-owned, or Private sector. However, NHTET Exam-qualified candidates do not have an automatic right to be inducted into NCHMCT-affiliated IHMs. They must undergo a separate selection process for the roles of Assistant Lecturer or Teaching Associates.
  • NCHMCT-affiliated IHMs are prohibited from recruiting Teaching Associates or Assistant Lecturers through direct recruitment for regular vacancies. Unless the candidate possesses a valid NHTET pass certificate.

Eligibility to sit in NHTET Exam

Bachelor’s Degree Requirements:

  • Candidates must hold a full-time Bachelor’s Degree (not on ODL mode) in Hospitality Administration, Hotel Management, or Culinary Art after 10+2 from a recognized University or Institute.
  • The degree should have at least 55% marks.
  • Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of Hospitality Industry Experience after obtaining the degree. (Industrial Training that is part of courses should not be considered as experience for this purpose.)
Master’s Degree Requirements:

  • Candidates should possess a full-time Master’s Degree in Hospitality Administration, Hotel Management, or Culinary Art with at least 55% marks from a recognized University or Institute.
  • The Master’s Degree should follow a full-time Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma (not on ODL mode) for a minimum of 3 years duration after 12th from a recognized Board.
  • Diploma courses must have a prerequisite minimum qualification of 12th pass only, not 10th.
Additional Eligibility Criteria:
  • Candidates with a full-time Bachelor’s Degree (not on ODL mode) in Hospitality/Hotel Administration/Management/Culinary Art with 55% or more marks in aggregate can also apply.
  • These candidates must have appeared in the final semester (i.e., in the 4th Semester)/final year exam of the Master’s Degree.
  • Results should be declared within 2 months from the date of the NHTET exam, and all subjects of previous years/semesters must be passed.
  • Candidates in the 2nd year (3rd Semester) of their Master’s Degree in Hospitality or who have appeared in the final semester but have any paper back in earlier semesters are not eligible to apply.
Age Limit and Relaxation:
  • Candidates’ age should not exceed 35 years.
  • Relaxation of age by 5 years for SC/ST/PD categories and 3 years for OBC categories is applicable.
  • The maximum age for NHTET held from January to May is reckoned as on 31st July of the same year, and for NHTET held from July to October, it’s reckoned as on 31st December of the same year.

General and EWS Categories – TA 30 years, AL 35 years.

OBC Category- TA 33 years, AL 38 Years.

SC/ST and PD Categories- TA 35 years, AL 40 years.

SCHEME AND DAYS OF TEST For NHTET Exam

The Test will consist of three papers. All the three papers will consist of only objective type questions and will be held once in a calendar year. However, in case of insufficient candidates are qualified. The NCHMCT can hold the exam twice in a calendar year. The test will be held on a single day in two separate sessions as under.

Paper-I 

Paper-I will assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will test the candidate’s aptitude and method towards teaching, reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness/knowledge. The paper will consist of fifty (50) multiple-choice questions, each carrying two marks. Candidates must answer all fifty (50) questions. Attempting a question twice/thrice will result in negative marking. However, there will be no negative marking for questions left unattempted.

Paper-II

Paper-II shall consist of 50 multiple choice questions of Nutrition, Food science, General Management, hotel accounts and Food Costing. Each question will carry two marks.

Paper-III

Paper-III shall consist of 100 multiple choice questions.  Paper III will be of two types, one for “Generic” and another for “F & B Specialisation”.

For the Candidates having requisite qualification as per 3. 1 & 2 above in Hotel/ Hospitality Management/ Administration (without any specialization):

The Generic paper will consist of 100 MCQs from the four core areas of hospitality. Which are Food Production, F & B Service and Management, Accommodation Operation Management and House Keeping Management (25 questions from each area). Each question will carry two marks.

Similarly, For the Candidates having requisite qualification as per 3. 1 & 2 above in Culinary Art/ Science specialization:

The F & B Specialisation paper will include 100 MCQs from the two core areas of F & B Specialisation: Food Production and F & B Service (60 questions and 40 questions respectively). Each question will carry two marks.

Hence, Candidates must choose one of the two papers (Paper III) {either (a) or (b)} based on their qualification. It’s important to note that candidates will only be allowed to appear in the practical skill test corresponding to the theory option they have chosen based on their qualification. For instance, if a candidate selects Paper (a) i.e., Generic in Theory, they cannot opt for the practical test for option (b).

  • The candidate will have to mark the responses for questions of Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III on the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) sheet provided along with the Test Booklet. It may be noted that, single Question paper booklet and single OMR sheet will be used for Paper-I and Paper-II. The detailed instructions for filling up the OMR Sheet will be mentioned in the call letter/ hall ticket.

In case, the test is conducted in CBT (Computer Based Test) mode, the responses to be given on the Computer at the allotted exam centre only. There will not be any on-line test.

PROCEDURE & CRITERIA FOR DECLARATION OF RESULT:

NHTET Exam will comprise of following steps:

Step I: 

Minimum marks to be obtained in NHTET for considering a candidate eligibility for Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates in NCHM and its any affiliated IHM:


The candidates are required to obtain following minimum marks separately in Paper-I, Paper-II, Paper-III and Aggregate of three Papers, to become eligible for both i.e. Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates, are as given below:

The candidates are required to obtain following minimum marks separately in Paper-I, Paper-II, Paper-III and Aggregate of three Papers, to become eligible only for Teaching Associate, are as given below:

Therefore, the candidate declared pass for applying against Teaching Associateship will not be eligible to apply against any vacancy of Assistant Lecturer. In addition, such candidate has to take further chance in subsequent NHTET to pass with the required percentage prescribed for becoming eligible to the post of Assistant Lecturer.

Step II: 

Amongst those candidates who have cleared step I, a detailed mark sheet-cum-certificate will be prepared and send to such candidates. The said certificate will remain valid for the period mentioned on it, to apply for a post of Assistant Lecturer/ Teaching Associates in NCHM or any of its affiliated IHMs. 

Step III: 

Those candidates who have not cleared step I, a detailed tabulation sheet containing marks will be prepared with a remark ‘not cleared’. And, will be displayed in the web portal www.thims.gov.in.

Also, it may be noted that the above qualifying criteria decided by NCHMCT is final and binding. However, the NCHMCT has the power to change the qualifying criteria if feel necessary. And, notify along with reason for change before declaring the result.

Validity of the NHTET certificate from NHTET Exam

  • The Certificate will have valid up to the period. The Candidate will remain in the maximum age prescribed to apply against any vacancy of Assistant Lecturer and Teaching Associates.
  • In addition, the eligibility criteria and validity period may change in future. But the interest of the already qualified candidates will be taken care of.
  • So, at any later on stage during the validity period of the NHTET certificate. If found that the candidate furnished incorrect information and forged document to prove his/her eligibility, his/ her certificate of NHTET will be cancelled immediately and a common circular to that effect will immediately be issued to all the IHMs. His/ Her candidature will also be debarred for next two chance to sit in NHTET.

How to Apply

Application Process:
  • Candidates need to carefully review the details provided in the brochure. To understand the requirements for filling out the application form online at the portal www.thims.gov.in.
  • Before filling out the form, candidates must obtain a demand draft from any scheduled bank for the required application fee. The DD number will be necessary to complete the form. Providing an incorrect DD number may result in rejection of the form.
Document Upload:
  • Candidates must upload a scanned copy of a passport-size photograph with the required resolution and pixel dimensions.
  • Moreover, candidates need to upload a scanned copy of a valid ID card, such as Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Driving License, or Passport. With the required resolution and pixel dimensions.
  • It’s crucial to provide accurate information in the application, including correct spelling.
  • After that, candidates should verify that their mobile number and email address are valid. Since all communication regarding the application process will be sent through these channels. And, no physical mail will be sent to any candidate.
Experience Requirements:
  • Candidates without a Post Graduation Degree in Hospitality must provide details of at least two years of experience in the Hospitality Industry. (established Hotel, registered with Government, or classified or other Hospitality Industry) after obtaining their Hospitality Degree.
  • However, industrial training completed to fulfill degree requirements won’t count as experience. Additionally, providing false experience information during NHTET or failing to produce the experience certificate from the same Hotel or Industry mentioned in the NHTET Certificate during IHM selection constitutes falsification of information.
  • Consequently, this results in immediate cancellation of the NHTET Certificate and a two-chance debarment from applying for NHTET.
